Dear Sir/Madam,

Re: ADDRESSING THE DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICE OF MEDIA COVERAGE ON CRIMES AGAINST BLACK INDIVIDUALS

As a licensed social worker, I have seen many cases where people’s rights have been violated, and I know the importance of bringing attention to such issues to promote change.

The media has an immense impact on our society, and it has the power to shape our perceptions of the world around us. It is disheartening to see how the media has consistently failed to provide equal coverage to black victims of crimes compared to their white counterparts. The lack of attention and coverage for black victims is a serious issue, and it is time to demand accountability from the media outlets that perpetuate this discrimination.

In recent times, the case of the Oliver 3 highlights how black victims of crimes are neglected by the media. The three young black girls, Zi’Ariel Robinson-Oliver, A’Miyah Hughes, and Te’Mari Robinson-Oliver, were reported missing on July 28, 2022, in Atlanta, Texas. The girls’ cousin, Paris Propps, who was watching the three sisters and their siblings while their mother was at work, reported the girls missing around 9 p.m. Hours later, on July 29, all three bodies were found in a nearby pond. Despite the heinous nature of this crime, it received very little media attention.

In contrast, cases involving white victims, such as JonBenet Ramsey, Natalie Holloway, and Gabby Petito, receive extensive coverage on every news channel and every media outlet day in and day out. While it is important to give attention to all victims of crime, it is clear that there is a disparity in the amount of coverage that black victims receive.

This disparity in coverage has a real impact on the way people perceive crime and violence. When crimes involving black victims are not covered adequately, it sends a message that their lives are not valued as much as those of white victims. This message can lead to feelings of marginalization and despair within the black community and contribute to a larger culture of systemic racism.

It is also worth noting that this issue is not just limited to mainstream media outlets. Even within black media, there is a tendency to focus on stories that have a more positive angle, rather than covering stories that expose the harsh realities of life for many black people. This approach does not serve the community and perpetuates a cycle of silence and neglect.

It is time for the media to take a hard look at the way it covers crime and violence involving black victims. The media needs to be more inclusive and ensure that all victims, regardless of their race, receive equal attention and justice. The media can play a powerful role in shaping our society’s values and beliefs. By covering crimes involving black victims with the same level of attention and care as crimes involving white victims, the media can help promote a more just and equitable society.

I commend you for creating a platform where victims of all races can speak out about the tragedies and traumas they have endured. It is important to give voice to those who have been silenced and to promote a more just society. By providing a space for victims to share their stories, you are contributing to the larger movement towards greater awareness and accountability.

Influential journalists and news anchors are guilty of turning a blind eye to black victims of crimes. We cannot ignore the role they play in perpetuating this discrimination. It is time for them to use their platforms to bring attention to these injustices and ensure that all victims, regardless of their race, receive equal attention and justice.

It is imperative that the media take responsibility for their actions and inactions in covering crimes where black individuals are victims. As a society, we cannot continue to ignore the disparity in coverage between white and black victims. Every life deserves to be valued and every tragedy deserves to be acknowledged.

It is time for the media to do better. We call on all journalists and news outlets to use their platforms to speak out against these injustices and to shine a light on the stories that have been ignored for far too long. We urge them to commit to fair and equal coverage of all crimes, regardless of the race of the victim.

Furthermore, we encourage everyone to do their part in creating change. It is important to support black-owned media outlets, to demand accountability from the media, and to continue to raise awareness about these issues. We must all work together to create a world where every life is valued and every story is heard.

As we reflect on the tragic case of the Oliver 3 and countless other black victims who have been forgotten by the media, let us remember that their lives mattered. Let us honor their memories by fighting for a more just and equal society, where every person is seen and heard.

We hope that this message serves as a call to action for everyone to join us in the fight against injustice. It is time to make a change, and we cannot do it alone.

Yours Sincerely,
