I agree that most owners and operators in the United States have piston-engine aircraft. The main reason is that most of these aircraft rely on aviation gasoline (avgas) to power their craft and has been widely used (Kumar et al. 2020). The main reason it is widely used is that only remaining lead-containing transportation fuel in the world. The lead in the avgas helps prevent engine knock or detonation, which mainly leads to the engine’s sudden failure.
I agree that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a stricter National Ambient Air Quality Standard for lead concentrations. The main reason is that lead is a toxic substance that can be absorbed in the bloodstream or can get inhaled (Brandt et al .2020). I agree that the FAA also wanted to see a long-term reduction in the use of avgas by 2018 because it has established a rigorous test program to facilitate the approval and evaluation of unleaded fuels that are environmentally friendly and safer than lead fuels.
I agree that a viable alternative to avgas is still a long way out as there have been two and a half years of testing unleaded avgas, and the results have been unsuccessful up-to-date.
