RE: XXXX: APPEAL OF THE DECISION OF THE
ADMINISTRATIVE HEARING OFFICER, STUDENT CONDUCT AND
COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITIES
My name is XXX, a student enrolled at XXXX University.
Reference is made to the decision made by Mr. Bradley Pearson, Administrative Hearing
Officer, Student Conduct and Community Responsibilities dated XXX. In his
decision the Administrative Hearing Officer issued a sanction of suspension for a period
of two years, beginning on XXXX and ending on XXXX. In addition, any
pre-registration for classes I had done will be cancelled and I will be prevented from
enrolling for classes in future. If I am not allowed to complete the current semester, I
will receive a withdrawal grade of WX for all current classes retroactive to the date of the
original decision of suspension, which is XXX
This is an appeal of the above-referenced decision as well as the foregoing sanctions
issued against me. I am appealing on the ground that the sanctions are disproportionate
to the academic offence.
I was suspended for forgetting to include in-text citations in my paper, leaving out a
reference for one of the sources, and taking words from sources verbatim. It was an
honest mistake to forget to include in-text citations in my paper and leaving out a
reference for one of the sources. I was diligent in doing the assignment and I deeply
regret forgetting that and taking words from sources verbatim. The words taken
verbatim were from a draft that I used to prepare the assignment, and were submitted
accidentally. None of those actions were deliberate.
The sanctions issued against me are excessive considering that I committed honest
mistakes and none of my actions were intentional. Being a student, a two-year
suspension will do more harm than rehabilitative/corrective good. The suspension will
be a huge loss in my studies and I will not be able to achieve my dreams. My father and
mother will lose any hope for their old age. The punishment is severe and is detrimental
to me as it will not give me any chance to improve. I urge you to reduce the suspension
period from 24 months to ___ months.
I am greatly remorseful for my mistakes and have every intention of improving. Given a
second chance, I will demonstrate a persistent and determined attitude in overcoming
this mistake productively and successfully.
I am in the process of familiarizing myself more with the university’s research guidelines
to ensure that I will be in compliance with them while doing future research and
assignments. I am confident that I will acquire the necessary abilities to avoid repeating
such terrible mistakes. I will, without a doubt, make the most of the research lessons I
am taking and will return to being a stable, exceptional student of Illinois State
University.
REASONS WHEREFORE, PREMISES CONSIDERED, I respectfully request you to
vacate the decision of the Administrative Hearing Officer, Student Conduct and
Community Responsibilities; reduce my suspension period from 24 months to ___
months; vacate all other sanctions issued against me; and grant me such equitable and
further relief as you may deem fair and proper.
