Executive summary
Urban gang violence is a severe social media issue affecting society and remains highly risky in society. This policy issue explores the current guidelines controlling such antisocial behaviors across the virtual connection. To deliver the essential guidelines to resolve the underlying problems, this document provides the alternative policy guidelines necessary to consider to establish applicable guidelines that would lead to a successful social interaction at any given time. These alternatives are believed to be quite useful when stringent guidelines are imposed.
Statement of the issue
Social media use is one of the fast-growing areas where crime has immensely grown, leaving millions of victims with immense damage, some to the extent of impossible recovery. This type of social injustice has raised a red flag as anyone from all the world regions can become victimized through a button’s touch (Behrman, 2015).Indeed, the trouble continues increasing as more social media interaction platforms continue being established and modern communication gadgets continue being manufactured as well. As the more need for virtual connection arises, the more the platform’s problems are developed (Stuart, 2020). Reports show that more than half of the world uses social media, which represents about 4.57 billion people globally who use the internet. Regionally, 63% Eastern Asia, 69% Northern America, 40% Northern Africa, 66% Northern Europe and 7% Middle Africa. Urban gang violence has been increasing based on these excessive social media use, where people can easily connect and plan for antisocial behavior.
The social media policy put in place mainly governs the use of the platform across organizations without any appropriate regard to ordinary life situations. Existing policy guidelines are based on the following statements:
- Be respectful
- Be honest and accurate
- Share only the necessary and respectful material
Without the necessary follow-up in the general social media use, virtual crime has even increased compared to traditional crime methodologies (Patton et al. 2016). As a result, urban gang violence from the unregulated use of social media incitation calls for strict containment measures.
Proposed policy alternatives
- Avoid violence and any activity that may lead to incitation and harm to human lives. This guideline would allow people to peacefully interact virtually and prevent any decisions that could lead to urban gang violence.
- Be your brother’s keeper, and promote peace and justice at all times. The policy limits social media use for positive interpersonal connections and promoting peace and unity.
- Avoid virtual propaganda as much as possible. The use of social media has increased the rate of non-verified information across the virtual community. This policy proposal would ensure that everyone reacts only to information that has been approved and, as a result, reduce urban gang violence just because some information popped from one’s gadget.
Policy recommendation
Most importantly, if the three social media policy alternatives were integrated, a better environment would be provided. It would cover the general social media application that faces the main challenge of control and, hence, increase the crime rate. Any issue witnessed to originate from any violation of the policy proposal; stringent action should be imposed on the perpetrator (Behrman, 2015). Authorities should hence be keen to ensure that every issue is addressed adequately at any given time.
