RE: STUDENT LOAN FORGIVINESS
Dear President Joseph R. Biden,
This letter serves as my formal request for my federal and private student loans forgiviness. I am
a student at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, residing in Boston MA.
My federal Nelnet student loans is currently $68,163.31 and my private loan is $8,000 a total of
$76,163.31. The said loans are overly burdensome to me. I have been working for the post office
for 7 years and 6 months now earning $52,000. I have been struggling for a very long time trying
to pay them off, but it has been a challenge considering that I do not make enough from work
and rent being so high. Besides, I have to rent a room and I am still having a hard time paying
my bills.
Since I work for a federal job, I qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
However, I was informed by the officials responsible for the said program that since I was
working at the post office while in school, they do not count those years. Accordingly, the 7
years and 6 months in which I worked for the federal government was a complete waste and
none of it goes towards my loan forgiveness. Also, since I did not make 120 payments because I
could not afford to, I had to decide whether to have a place to live or pay my student loans.
I was born into poverty. My mother never had an education and does not know how to read or
write. She receives government benefits and has struggled her whole life trying to provide for my
younger siblings and I. Seeing her struggle, I wanted to find a way to help and that left me with
the only option to go to college with the hope of getting a good job. At age 18, I did not know
what I was doing, I lacked any guidance or professional help. For that reason, I thought I was
doing the right thing by taking out student loans, which quickly escalated and turned into a
tragedy the minute they started asking for high monthly payments. I could not finish my last
semester of college because I was working over 60 hours a week and that was still not enough to
cover all my expenses since my loans fell behind a few months. What followed was one of the
very darkest moments in my life. I was very depressed, anxious, and often had panic attacks that
made me end up in the Emergency room. During those times, I felt like a complete failure
because I could not purse my dreams and worst of all I could not provide for my family in need.
For the foregoing reasons, I humbly request your office to forgive my Federal and Private
student loans.
