RE: REQUEST FOR PUBLIC ACCOMODATION
I am writing to request public accommodation under Rhode Island state law based on the following reasons;
I have medical issues that require me to secure a safe place where I can stay and a place where my belongings can be safe too. My safety is an issue of concern. I suffered injury at work 2 months ago, I sleep on a tiny mattress and I feel singled out by the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless. In addition to that, I have been a victim of humiliation, bullying and verbal insults at Providence Rescue Mission due to the nature of my problems. I have been on waiting list for shelter for more than 6 months. However, Crossroads offer vouchers to people who do not have the same problem as mine therefore making me feel like am being neglected by the government yet I am a patriotic citizen. Based on the multiple injuries and emotional issues that I am encountering, I honesty deserve public accommodation. My rights have been ignored by the homeless agencies as mentioned earlier and government officers even after the injuries on my upper back shoulder, elbow, and neck 2 months ago. I have been on surgery and I’m still in the recovery phase. However, I cannot afford a place for recovery since I spent the last dollar I had on it.
In accordance to R.I Gen. Laws § 11-24-2, places of public accommodations shall not directly or indirectly refuse, withhold from, or deny to any person any of the accommodations, advantages, facilities or privileges of that public place and further shall not advertise or state that their accommodations are so limited because of any reason protected by the law such as disability.
The legal objective of public accommodation statutes is to make equal access to and the use of places of public accommodation, resorts and amusement a public right. In order to ensure the adherence of the right, states have declared it to be their public policy, in the interest of the general welfare, to use the police power to prohibit discrimination.
