PLAGIARISM STATEMENT

To The University of London, Internal Panel
Dear Sirs,
RE; PLAGIARISM STATEMENT
The above matter refers.
I refer to your letter dated 17 th August, 2022 on the alleged plagiarism reported by the
Academics from the PGDip Public Health programme team on my online timed assessment
(PHM103 – Introduction to health economics).
To begin with, I would humbly like to state that my time at the University has been very
informative and fulfilling; I have had no intention, neither do I have any intention at present, to
curtail or interfere with my opportunity to study at the University. I respect the University’s
rules and regulations and understand that they are all geared towards ensuring among others, that
its students are credible. This includes but is not limited to the subject University’s General
Regulations for Online Timed Assessments.
I note that you intend to examine whether I have breached the University’s General Regulations,
and further, whether you need to take further action per the Procedures for the Consideration of
Allegations of Assessment Offence. I implore that should there be any fault found on my part, that
I have breached the University’s General Regulations, that you may consider not taking any
further action that will impede my studies at the University. I am however subject to the
recommendations that will be made by the panel to remedy this unfortunate situation.
I further note that the issue at hand relates to the passages which you stated appeared to match
directly to other sources e.g online materials, published texts like journals or books, study guides,
tutor’s notes, work shared between students, and my previous submissions. Allow me to start
with the online materials, published texts like journals or books, study guides, tutor’s notes, and
work shared between students. I have profound respect for writers and their materials; the
allegations against me are therefore regretful and unfortunate. I understand that when I use
someone else’s ideas or materials, I should acknowledge them. Moreover, I understand that
whether done intentionally or unintentionally, plagiarism is unethical, a theft of intellectual
property, and it is frowned upon since the offender unfairly benefits from the works of others,
and misrepresents themselves as well.
I beseech the panel to take into account, should they find that any plagiarism was committed, that
the same was not intended and is highly regretted; nothing was done with the intention of passing
off someone else’s ideas or materials as my own, and denying the original author the
acknowledgement that they deserve. I have taken this unfortunate event to familiarize myself
more with plagiarism and how I can avoid doing so accidentally, and on the proper way of
referencing. I undertake to be keener on the matter to avoid future disputes.

On the issue of previous submissions made by me (self-plagiarism), and in cognizance of the fact
that the panel does not take into account individual and personal situations, such as family, work
or health problems; I would like to point out that I am not a native English speaker, rendering
some seemingly trivial communication matters a challenge for me, this may have been exhibited
through the similar sentences found in my assignments as I have limited means of expressing
myself. I believe that this cannot be labelled an individual or personal matter as it applies to a
great number of people especially the non-native english speakers.

Yours sincerely,
